Cannabis consumption lounges coming next
Certain cannabis businesses in the state may be able to open consumption lounges in the new year, where customers can partake on-site.
The Cannabis Regulatory Commission announced said it will accept applications from designated cannabis businesses on Jan. 2. They include those owned by individuals with cannabis-related records or live in economically disadvantaged areas. Businesses owned by women and people of color will be able to apply on April 2. All other applicants can begin in July.
In announcing the program earlier this year, CRC Executive Director Jeff Brown said: “New Jersey’s cannabis industry is well on its way to being a billion-dollar industry, and consumption areas will likely bolster that – fostering a communal experience for those 21 and older around cannabis in a regulated and secure space.”
There will be no cap on the number of consumption lounges allowed in the state. Smaller businesses will have to pay a $1,000 annual licensing fee, while larger businesses will face a $5,000 fee.
CRC officials said the consumption lounges are important to the health of the state’s marijuana industry.
“Having space to consume cannabis is not just about recreation. It is also about providing equitable access and offering people a safe place to consume legal cannabis products,” said CRC Chairwoman Dianna Houenou. “This move holds particular significance for communities that are limited in where they can enjoy cannabis – most notably, renters who cannot consume cannabis at home, unlike homeowners who enjoy greater freedom.”
