Ending federal weed ban just passed US House

The U.S. House on Friday agreed to end the federal ban on cannabis, a move that could end the conflict with dozens of states, including New Jersey, that have legalized weed.

The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act, or MORE Act, would removing cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act, allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to prescribe medical marijuana to veterans with PTSD, and expunge certain convictions.

It would impose a federal sales tax on legal weed sales to fund grants for communities and individuals hardest hit by the war on drugs, letting them benefit from legalization.

In addition, by decriminalizing cannabis under federal law, the legislation would remove the barrier stopping most banks from offering checking accounts, credit cards and other financial services to legal marijuana businesses.

The vote was largely along party lines, 220-204, with two Democrats voting no and three Republicans voting yes. All 10 New Jersey Democrats supported the bill and both Republicans opposed it.
